I’m a Ukraine correspondent for The New York Times, based in Kyiv. I have been covering the war in Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
I previously served as the Ukraine Bureau Chief for The Washington Post.
Prior to being named bureau chief in 2025, I served as the newspaper’s Chief Ukraine Correspondent, Cairo Bureau Chief and as a staff writer on the international desk in Washington, D.C. I have reported from Afghanistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Togo, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among other countries.
In addition to my newspaper work, I am a regular guest on NPR and RTÉ.
My name is pronounced Sha-VON.
